With a minimum of four passengers depart Timaru by road, travelling inland through the country township of Pleasant Point, with a brief stop there at the railway museum before travelling onto the small farming hamlet of Albury.
Here you will depart the main state highway and travel on hardly used back roads which were the main routes used by the original European settlers to this region in the mid 1800’s, including the famous James Mackenzie after whom this high country region was named. After travelling over the Mackenzie pass and a stop at the Mackenzie monument you will rejoin the state highway before ascending Burkes Pass and reaching the Tekapo Basin.
At the top of Burkes Pass you will immediately view the magnificent scenery of New Zealand’s Southern Alps
The tour proceeds to the tranquil turquoise coloured waters of Lake Tekapo with its famous Church of the Good Shepard and the statue of Mackenzie Dog. The tour will then proceed up to the Mount John Observatory, 300 meters above Lake Tekapo and providing you with magnificent 360 degree views and photo opportunities of this entire region.
There will be time in Tekapo to have a late lunch, at your own expense. From Tekapo you will return to Timaru via the state highway. Time permitting a brief tour of the Timaru township will conclude your day.
